Books, books, books, medical students cant run away from books. This is some suggestion of books that might be useful for you guys.
Q: I am a first year medical student in RCSI. But I don’t know what books should be brought. Could you please help me?
A: I will list down all books that are widely used among Malaysians and other international students as well.
For Anatomy:
Clinical Anatomy by Stanley Monkhouse
*most recommended
The author of this book is Stanley Monkhouse, a former professor of Anatomy and professor of Medical Informatics at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Most of the students have this book and usually Malaysian would buy this book from Malaysia (eg: Kedai Kamal) as it is cheaper there.
Atlas of Human Anatomy - 4th Edition, by Frank H. Netter

This book is absolutely THICK. You may consider of purchasing the BABY version of this book. Which is as below
Netter’s Anatomy Flash Cards: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access (Netter Basic Science) [Cards], by frank H. Netter
*recommended
It is a set of flash card, very light and small. Now, you can study anatomy anywhere by bringing that flash card which can be separated according to topic. But if you guys don’t want to buy it,doesn’t matter because there is a digital atlas that look exactly like this book and download it into your laptop!! You can ask from your seniors. For ipod or iphone users, feel lucky that you can download Netter’s Anatomy Flash Cards for iPhone, and iPod touch.
Gray’s Anatomy for Students 2nd edition, by Richard L. Drake, A. Wayne Vogl, Adam W. M. Mitchell
This book contains many images. Absolutely amazing images and explanation! However students tend to borrow this book from library, rarely people would buy this book as it is expensive. In my opinion, i dont really recommend you to buy it because you can just get it from RCSI library.
For Embryology:
Langman’s Medical Embryology Eleventh Edition, by Thomas W Sadler
This would be your main reference for embryology subject other than your lecture notes. This book explains almost all embryological concepts and easy to understand.
For Physiology:
Human Physiology: From Cells to Systems, by Lauralee Sherwood
Textbook of Medical Physiology eleventh edition by Arthur C. Guyton and John E. Hall
For Biochemistry
Lippincott’s Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry 5th edition by Pamela C Champe, Richard A Harvey, Denise R Ferrier
For Pharmacology
Rang & Dale’s Pharmacology 6th edition, by Humphrey P. Rang &, Maureen M. Dale
ALL books mentioned above can be found in OUR LIBRARY.
Q: But books are heavy. Do you have anything online?
Yes we have our Virtual Learning Environment. Our main resources are from the RCSI Virtual Learning Environment or the “Moodle”. You can find all the lectures notes and all the stuff you need as RCSI students here (but, you need to have RCSI email address to log in). It is also our form of communication between students and lecturers.
Main references of RCSI student are actually all the notes uploaded in the Moodle. There are learning objectives for each lecture notes. We use these as our guidance iin learning materials.
Q: WoW, that’s interesting! Do we need to bring anything else besides books?
A:: Yes, you need to bring instruments for Clinical Competencies and anatomy lab. These include:
1. Lab coat
2. Latex glove
3. Stethoscope
4. Pen tourch
5.Dissection kit (optional)
